Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 or 4.5, I'm not quite sure how to classify it, so I rounded it up simply because I love the world and the writing, will definitely come back to this review and change it accordingly, after reading the rest of Alice's many adventures in Wonderland)
This was lovely, however, I kept thinking of the Disney version while reading and realized that I might prefer the movie (not quite sure yet).
*gasp*
I know, I know... "The horror! Blasphemy!"
It was still a very enjoyable read and I highly recommend it to any fan of fairy tales or hilariously absolute nonsense!
I loved the writing, the prose the poems, everything.
However, some of the characters were a little weird... I see why they were cut from the film (pig-baby, cook and duchess), I liked the frog and fish though, but I'm sad there were no flowers (I'm assuming they're part of the second book?).
Anyway, I find it impossible to review this book without making it all sound ridiculously absurd, and I think that's the best compliment one can give to Alice in Wonderland!
So I'll just review the edition instead, mine is the puffin hardcover edition with illustrations by Anna Bond of Rifle Paper co., and it's beautiful.
I didn't realize when I bought it, but behind the brown dust cover was an even prettier lavender cover with shiny gold detailing, and it's gorgeous, all of the illustrations are.
These are just a couple of my favorites, I love the chalky feel to them, or maybe it's gouache, it used to be common practice for illustrators to use it, I wonder if it's come back in style?
Regardless, it works. The style is simplistic and endearing with a lot of detail, I couldn't be happier that I bought this book and definitely recommend this edition!
Love, Mariana
